How to Add Your Passport to Google Wallet

To incorporate your passport into Google Wallet, navigate to the “Add to Wallet” menu and select the “U.S. Passport (beta)” option, which complements the existing “Driver’s license or state ID” feature. Google Wallet Tests Digital Passports process consists of three straightforward steps:

  1. Capture Passport Information: Take a photo of the information page in your passport that includes your picture or manually enter the details.
  2. Scan the Security Chip: Open the back cover of your passport and scan the embedded security chip. Ensure your phone case is removed for optimal scanning:
    • Place your passport on a flat surface.
    • Slowly move the back of your phone around the inside back cover to locate the chip.
  3. Identity Verification: Record and submit a brief video of your face for verification purposes. Google will compare this video with your passport photo to confirm your identity.

Current Availability and Requirements

Currently, this feature is in beta testing and is available only to users enrolled in the Google Play services beta program, requiring Android 9 or later. It is limited to domestic flights within the U.S. at select airports. Users can utilize NFC technology to transmit their ID information to TSA readers, where they will have the option to review and either proceed or cancel the information sharing.

Security Features

Similar to state IDs, users can remotely remove their digital passport from Google Wallet if their device is lost or stolen. The digital IDs are encrypted for security, requiring authentication via fingerprint, PIN, or passcode before access.

Future Prospects

Google aims to expand this digital ID capability beyond TSA checkpoints, potentially including applications for account recovery and car rentals. As digital wallets gain traction—reported to be used by 70% of consumers in various countries—Google continues enhancing its offerings in this space, making everyday transactions more convenient while reducing reliance on physical documents. This innovative feature promises to simplify travel experiences for users who can manage their identification digitally, although it remains essential to carry a physical ID during this initial rollout phase.(Google Wallet Tests Digital Passports)
