Install Android 16 and Try What’s New
Overview of Android 16 Developer Preview 2
A month after the initial developer preview for Android 16 was released, Google has made available the second developer preview for developers to download and install. This updated build introduces enhancements to app performance, improvements in battery longevity, and overall performance upgrades, as detailed in Google’s official blog.
Key Features and Improvements
Google is providing early adopters with a limited preview of Android 16, part of its strategy to expedite the rollout of Android updates. Announced in November, the first developer preview arrived three months earlier than the previous year’s Android 15 preview. This proactive approach suggests that the final version of Android 16 is anticipated to launch in the second quarter of 2025, ahead of its usual third-quarter release schedule.Matthew McCullough, Vice President of Product Management for Android development, stated that this adjustment aims to synchronize better with device launch schedules across Google’s ecosystem. For instance, the Pixel 9 series was launched in August this year instead of October, which resulted in Android 15 being absent at its release.
New Features in Developer Preview 2
The second developer preview includes several notable features aimed primarily at developers:
- Selective Photo Access: Apps can now be more discerning regarding which photos they can access.
- Medical Records Integration: An early version allows apps to read and write medical records with user consent.
- Adaptive Display Refresh Rate: This feature helps reduce power consumption by adjusting the display refresh rate according to content.
- Enhanced Haptic Feedback: Developers can create more complex haptic effects with new APIs that allow customization of amplitude and frequency curves.
This developer preview is designed mainly for app creators, enabling them to experiment with and integrate these new functionalities into their applications well before the official release of Android 16.
Release Schedule and Compatibility
The pre-release timeline for Android 16 has been reset to commence previews in late 2024, followed by a feature release in early 2025 and a full rollout in mid-2025. The current schedule includes monthly beta releases starting January through April (or possibly May), culminating in a final release thereafter. While Google has not provided a comprehensive list of compatible devices for Android 16, it confirmed that the developer preview can be utilized on Pixel 6 series devices (including Pixel 6a) and newer models up to Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. This compatibility mirrors that of last year’s Android 15 developer beta.Developers interested in testing Android 16 can flash their supported devices using the Android Flash Tool after unlocking their bootloader. Those already on the first developer preview can update over-the-air (OTA) to this second version.
